The Odaesan National Park ( 오대산 국립 공원 ) is a national park in the South Korean province of Gangwon-do . In addition to Mount Odaesan (1563 m), the park also includes the Woljeongsa and Sangwosa temples.

Location and geography

The national park is located about five kilometers west of the city center of Gangneung and can be reached quickly from there via Expressway 50 . Part of the national park is located in the urban area of ​​Gangneung, part in the district of Pyeongchang (Pyeongchang-gun).

The park is located at the intersection of the Taebaek and Charyeong mountain ranges . The name Odaesan means five-level mountain and refers to the five plateaus Manwoldae, Jangnyeongdae, Girindae, Sangsamdae and Jigongdae.

Flora and fauna

1040 different plant and 2748 animal species were found in the national park, of which 1979 were insects. The rarest species in the park include the Schwertlilienart Iris odaesanensis and the Ural .

The Woljeongsa Temple is a complex that consists of 60 temples and 6 hermitages. The complex houses the famous octagonal stone Saria pagoda with nine floors (National Treasure No. 48) and a stone Buddha figure in a seated position (National Treasure No. 139).

The Sangwonsa Temple is eight kilometers north of the Woljeongsa Complex. It houses the National Treasure No. 36, the oldest bronze bell in South Korea from 725, and the National Treasure No. 221, a statue of Bodhisattva Manjusri (Munsu Bosal).
