National parks in South Korea
South Korea has 22 national parks , including seventeen mountain national parks, four marine and coastal national parks, and one historical national park. With the exception of Hallasan National Park on Jeju Island , all national parks are managed by the Korea National Park Service .
overview
The government in South Korea began to protect the country's natural heritage from building and deforestation back in the 1960s by establishing national parks . Jirisan National Park was established as the first national park in 1967 , followed by another 21 by 2016. About 6.7% of the area of South Korea is protected as a national park.
The parks are open all year round, but areas of the parks are repeatedly closed, either to prevent the risk of accidents from snow and ice or to allow nature to regenerate in the closed areas. In almost every park there is one or more temple complexes, in which parts of the national treasure are often kept. The Gyeongju National Park has even been set up especially for the national treasures in the area. All national parks have a tourist center that provides tourists with information, shopping and accommodation. In some parks, simple huts or shelters have been built along the hiking trails in which hikers can seek shelter or spend the night. The parks are very popular, which is why parks such as Jirisan National Park or Bukhansan National Park , located near the capital Seoul, are very well visited on the weekends.
