The Gayasan National Park ( 가야산 국립 공원 ) is located in South Korea about 30 km west of Daegu. It gets its name from Gayasan , whose summit Sangwangbong 1430 m and Chulbulbong 1433 m high.

Location and geography

The national park is easily accessible via Expressway 12 from Daegu; almost half of it lies in the provinces of Gyeongsangnam-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do . It is part of the Sobaek Mountains .

Flora and fauna

590 plant species have been counted in the park, including such rare species as the Lilium cernuum and occurring only in Korea saussurea Xuelian pseudo-gracilis . The animal species are divided into 22 mammal, 61 bird, 11 amphibian, 5 reptile and 423 insect species.

Attractions

The outstanding sights include the temple complexes of the Haeinsa temple and its treasures. The temple was founded in 802 and is not only one of the three most important Buddhist temples in the country, also known as the Three Jewel Temples , it is also home to the 81,258 wooden printing boards of the Tripitaka Koreana . Manufactured between 1236 and 1251, they survived conflagrations, the Imjin and Korean Wars . The facility is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in South Korea .
