The Jirisan National Park is a national park in the East Asian country South Korea . It was established in 1967 as the first national park in South Korea.

location

The national park is located in the border area of the three provinces Jeollanam-do , Jeollabuk-do and Gyeongsangnam-do . It is located in the catchment area of the Seomjingang River . On its territory are the mountains Jirisan with 1,915 m, Banyabong with 1,732 m and Nogodan with 1,507 m. The Jirisan is not only namesake of this park, it is also the second highest mountain in South Korea after the Hallasan volcano and is therefore regarded as one of the sacred mountains of Korea. On its slopes is the Samseonggung Shrine in memory of Hwanin , Hwanung and Dangun , the three mystical founders of Go-Joseon , the first kingdom on the Korean Peninsula .

Flora and fauna

Among the 4,989 documented animal and plant species, mammals include deer, rabbits, elks and wild cats, as well as Korea's only bear population. About 20 Asiatic black bears of the subspecies Ursus thibetanus ussuricus live here . These were actually considered extinct in Korea before this group was discovered in 2001. The most famous trees in the park include the Higan cherry tree at Hwaeomsa Temple and the Millennium Pine Tree (Korean: Waun Cheonyeongsong ). One of the attractions of the park is the azalea blossom, for example in the azalea field in the Chilseon valley.
