The Taeanhaean Coastal National Park ( 태안 해안 국립 공원 ) was established in 1978 as the 13th national park in South Korea . It is located in Chungcheongnam-do Province on the coast of the West Sea, as the Yellow Sea is also called in Korea.
Location and geography
The national park is about 25 km west of the town of Seosan. It is located on the west coast of the Taen Peninsula and Anmyeondo Island . The park has 72 mostly uninhabited islands. There are also some rocks, some of which have a mystical meaning.
Flora and fauna
The coastal ecosystem of the national park is home to 774 plant species thanks to its intact coastal landscape with sandy beaches, pine forests and swamps. In addition to the 671 species of marine life, 1195 animal species come ashore. Among the 17 endangered species that have found refuge here are the shy snow heron and the Korean tiger lizard. The bird species mandarin duck , kestrel and osprey are also native here.
Beaches and hiking trails
Like many other South Korean national parks, the Taean National Park serves not only to protect flora and fauna, but also to relax people, which is why there are 26 beaches in this national park that are freely accessible, as well as a 120 km long hiking trail that can be used to explore the entire coast from Hangpo in the north to Yeongmokhang in the south. Mallipo and Cheollipo beaches are very popular with day trippers from the greater Seoul area, especially in summer .
Events
The mud on the coast of the national park is rich in minerals and is therefore also sold. At the Boryeong Mud Festival ( 보령 머드 축제 ), visitors can try out all sorts of products related to mud.
