The Taebaeksan National Park ( Korean 태백산 국립 공원 ) is one of 22 National Park in South Korea . It was established in 2016 as the twenty-second national park in the east of the country.

geography

The Taebaeksan National Park is located around 45 km northeast of the small coastal town of Uljin ( 울진군 ) in the Gangwon-do province ( 강원도 ) and just under 40 km west of the east coast of the country. From Wonju ( 원주 ), the most populous city in the province, it is around 90 km to the northwest.

The park has an area of ​​70.052 km 2 . The park is home to the Taebaeksan ( 태백산 ), which gives the park its name and, at 1567  m, forms the highest elevation within the park, the two next highest peaks of which are the Busoebong ( 부쇠 봉 ) at 1546  m and the Munsubong ( 문수봉 ) at 1517  m height.

history

Taebaeksan Park was established as a provincial park on May 13, 1989 by the Gangwon-do provincial government under notice number 60. On May 12, 2016, the South Korean Ministry of the Environment granted the park national park status under announcement number 2016-92, and on August 22, 2016, the Korea National Park Service opened its national park office in Taebaek City ( 태백시 ), Gangwon-do Province.

On the Yeongbong ( 영봉 ), another well over 1000  m high peak, shamanic rites used to be held, which is why the place was registered as an important folklore cultural heritage under the number 228.

Flora and fauna

The largest part of the park is at an altitude of over 1000  m and is therefore one of the Korean-Alpine regions with a vegetation that is typical and in part unique for the area. 2637 species have been recorded, 22 of which are threatened. The park is home to a total of 1164 different plant species, including the rare species such as table leaf ( Astilboides tabularis ), large-flowered lady's slipper ( Cypripedium macranthos ), seven star ( Trientalis europaea ) and Anagallidium dichotomum .

Further in the park occurring plants are blooming in spring violet erythronium ( Erythronium japonicum ), Primula jesoana and microrrhynchum Gymnospermium and flowering in summer Lilium distichum , catchflies ( Lychnis ) koreanum Geranium , Snow Loosestrife ( Lysimachia clethroides ) Hosta capitata and Astilbe chinensis . Wildflowers, plants as there are blooming in the mountains from July to August lady's bedstraw ( Galium verum ), maackii Veratrum , Valeriana phu , Angelica ( Angelica ), Vicia unijuga , the monkshood Aconitum jaluense , Spiranthes sinensis , latiovalifolium Sedum , aleppicum Geum , the lice herb Pedicularis resupinata , great burnet ( Sanguisorba officinalis ), Argun Drachenkopf ( Dracocephalum argunense ), Adenophora koreana , Veratrum oxysepalum , hydrangea ( Hydrangea ) Tephroseris flammea , Hemerocallis dumortieri , Hypericum ascyron , Thalictrum filamentosum , Thalictrum kemense and heracleum moellendorffii .

Taebaeksan Mountain Snow Festival

The Taebaeksan Mountain Snow Festival ( 태백산 눈 축제 ), known in South Korea, is held annually in the park , during which figures are created from snow and ice on a plateau at a height of 800  m .

Coal museum

The national park is home to the Taebaek Coal Museum ( 태백 석탄 박물관 ), the only coal museum in the country. Coal played a major role in the country's energy supply for a long time. It was replaced by the use of nuclear energy . The museum gives a review and covers the history of coal mining in South Korea and the region.
