The large-flowered lady's slipper ( Cypripedium macranthos ) is a species of the genus Cypripedium in the orchid family (Orchidaceae).

The large-flowered lady's slipper is a perennial plant with a short, thick rhizome that grows to heights of 25 to 40 centimeters, rarely only 15 or 50 centimeters. The bare or only slightly hairy stem has three to four leaves . These are oval, pointed, 10 to 15 × 6 to 8 centimeters in size. The flowers are solitary, rarely two per plant. The ovary is hairless or hairless. The bracts measure 7 to 14 × 3 to 3.5 centimeters. The flower stalk and ovary are 3 to 4.5 inches long. The upper outer tepal measures 3.2 to 5.3 × 2 to 3.4 centimeters. The lower outer tepal measures 2.8 to 4 × 1.4 to 2 centimeters and is bare on the edge. The tepals are purple or pink in color, with darker nerves. They are also rarely white or cream-colored. The lip is 3 to 5.5 inches long, with a 1.5-inch opening. The staminodium is elongated oval.

Flowering time is from May to July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 20, rarely 22.

Occurrence

The large-flowered lady's slipper occurs in temperate Eastern Europe, Siberia, Eastern Russia, Korea, Japan and Taiwan in meadows, bushes, in forests in damp locations in light shade and on river banks at altitudes up to 2,400 meters. It grows in humus-rich, not waterlogged soils. The total distribution area extends from eastern Belarus to Japan.

The large-flowered lady's slipper is rarely used as an ornamental plant for groups of trees and pots. The species has been in culture since 1829 at the latest.
