Olof Peter Swartz (born September 21, 1760 in Norrköping , † September 19, 1818 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Sw. "

Live and act

Swartz received his PhD from Uppsala University in 1781 at the age of 21 . From 1783 to 1787, he toured the West Indies and North America collecting plants. In 1788 he traveled to England . He then worked as a professor in Stockholm. One focus of his work was the spore plants .

In 1789 he became a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In 1805 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . From 1808 he was a foreign member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and from 1812 a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences and from 1814 of the Académie des Sciences . 1811-1818 he was permanent secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

Honors

The genus Swartzia Schreb. from the legume family (Fabaceae) is named after him.
