National treasures of South Korea

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The National Treasures of South Korea consist of a numbered series of art objects, places or buildings in South Korea as a culture are considered especially valuable. Many of these treasures are well known tourist attractions . A first list of cult treasures from this region was made in 1938 by the Japanese Governor General Chosens at a time when Korea was a province of Japan . The list of national treasures of Japan served as a template .

The current list was started on December 20, 1962, but was based on the list from 1938. It was passed as a law by the then Supreme Council for the National Reconstruction of the Military Government. Today the list consists of 317 entries, some of which themselves consist of a list of sub-entries. Numerous expansions followed, most recently in June 2012.
