Bunhwangsa is a Buddhist temple in Gyeongsangbuk-do Province in South Korea and is located near the city of Gyeongju , the former capital of the Silla Kingdom. The temple is home to the National Treasure No. 30 of South Korea: the oldest stone pagoda still in existence from the Silla period.

history

Bunhwangsa Temple was built in 634 C.E. Currently erected under Queen Seondeok . Originally the temple complex consisted of a flagpole, an inner gate, a stone pagoda, three golden halls, a meeting hall and a walkway, but most of the buildings were destroyed during the Mongol invasion of 1238 and Japanese raids in 1592 and 1597. In 1609 and 1774, respectively, the Bogwangjeong Hall and a Yaksayeorae statue were built.
