Jeungdo ( Korean 증도 ) is an island in Sinan-gun County ( 신안군 ) in Jeollanam-do Province ( 전라남도 ) in southwest South Korea .

geography

The 37.2 km 2 island is located around 30 km northwest of Mokpo ( 목포시 ) and around 60 km west-southwest of Gwangju ( 광주 ) and is one of the 827 islands that are off the southwest coast of South Korea. To the northwest of Jeungdo is the island of Imjado ( 임자도 ) , which is around 4 km away, and only around 1 km away, separated by a tidal creek , is adjacent to the island of Saokdo ( 사옥도 ) to the northeast . A road connection over a bridge leads to this in the middle of both islands. About 4 km southwest is the island of Bigeumdo ( 비금도 ) and on the southeast side there are several smaller managed and uncultivated islands. Jeungdo can be reached by ferry from Mokpo, which docks at the island's only ferry terminal on its eastern side.

The island consists of many small mountains that, with the exception of one mountain in the north, do not exceed 100  m . Between the mountains there are flat plains that are used for agricultural purposes. In the middle of the island are the salt pans that divide the island into north and south.

Administrative structure

The island is administratively organized together with a few smaller islands located to the southeast in the rural municipality Jeungdo-myeon ( 증도면 ), which is administered together with the rural municipalities of the other islands in the region of Sinan-gun County, which belongs to Jeollanam-do Province .

economy

The islanders prefer to live from agriculture, which is carried out in the plains between the mountains, and from the sea salt production in the salt pans, which are located in the middle of the island and are the largest sea salt production facilities in South Korea. Fishing is only carried out for personal use. Nine water reservoirs distributed over the island cover the drinking water and industrial water supply of the islanders.

Taepyeong Salt Farm

The Taepyeong salt flats were recognized and registered as a modern cultural asset of South Korea in 1997. Wooden paths have been laid between the salt fields so that visitors can visit the facilities without getting their feet wet.

Shinan Dadohae Biosphere Reserve

The southern part of Jeungdo belongs together with the larger islands of Bigeumdo ( 비금도 ) and Dochodo ( 도초도 ) to the Shinan Dadohae Biosphere Reserve .
