Jeolla-do is the name of an earlier province in Korea . It was in the southwest of the peninsula and had Jeonju as its capital.

Jeolla originated as Jeollaju-do during the Goryeo Dynasty and was renamed at the beginning of the Joseon Dynasty in the early 15th century. The name was formed from the names of the cities Jeonju and Naju ( nn becomes ll in Korean ). In 1894, the Donghak uprising began here , a peasant revolt. In 1896 , the present-day South Korean provinces Jeollabuk-do and Jeollanam-do emerged from the province .

The region is still considered a stronghold of the political liberals, hence the Deobureo-minju party .
