Gyeongsang-do is the name of an earlier province in southeast Korea . Their capital was Daegu .
The province emerged at the time of the Goryeo dynasty and received its name in 1314 , which was drawn from the city names Gyeongju and Sangju . It was one of the eight provinces in the Joseon Dynasty Korea .
In 1896 it was divided into the present-day South Korean provinces of Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongsangnam-do .
The region is still considered a stronghold of the political conservatives, hence the Saenuri party .
