Pyeongan-do is one of the historical provinces of Korea . It was in the northwest of the country and had Pyongyang as its capital.

The province emerged at the beginning of the Joseon Dynasty and got its name from the contraction of the city names Pyongyang and Anju . Another name for the region is Gwanseo . In 1896 the area was divided into the present-day North Korean provinces of Pyeonganbuk-do and Pyeongannam-do .
