Roy Ellam (born January 13, 1943 in Hemsworth ) is a retired English football player . The central defender was active for the fourth division Bradford City for a long time at the beginning of the 1960s . He rose with the following club Huddersfield Town in the top division before it pulled him in 1972 to the top club Leeds United . There he did not gain a foothold, however, and he made little contribution to winning the English championship in 1974 .

Athletic career

At a young age, Ellam first played for the club Robin Hood Athletic, which is active in the Leeds region . He tried unsuccessfully as a forward auditioning for Leeds United before retraining to the defensive position. Ellam turned down an offer from Queens Park Rangers and instead went to nearby third division club Bradford City in August 1959 . When the "Bantams" had just relegated to fourth class, he signed his first professional contract there in May 1961. After his first sporadic appearances, he developed into a regular player from the 1962/63 season. Until the turn of the year 1965/66 he remained a fixture in the defensive network of the team, which, however, always failed on promotion to the third-class Third Division and often even ranked in the back of the fourth division. After 149 league games and twelve goals, he finally moved to the second division and local rivals Huddersfield Town in January 1966 . In Huddersfield, Ellam formed an effective duo with Trevor Cherry . The greatest success in the 1969/70 season was winning the second division championship and the associated promotion to the top English division. Shortly before Huddersfield Town in the 1971/72 season as the bottom of the table had to start again in the second division, Cherry had left the club in the direction of runner-up Leeds United. Ellam followed him in August 1972 after playing a total of 206 championship games for Huddersfield Town. The transfer fee for Leeds was £ 35,000.

Ellam's debut for Leeds on Matchday 1 of the 1972/73 season was a disaster. After Allan Clarke and Norman Hunter, among others, were absent due to injury or suspension, Ellam adapted to the extremely poor team performance, which ended in a 4-0 defeat against Chelsea . Coach Don Revie planned to build Ellam as a replacement for the aging Jack Charlton , but the subsequent good performances by Charlton and the up-and-coming Gordon McQueen ensured that Ellam quickly found himself on the "siding". With only four league appearances in the 1973/74 championship season , he also did not qualify for the official receipt of a medal. In July 1974 he briefly returned to Huddersfield - now only active in the third division - before he moved to the North American NASL to the Philadelphia Atoms in April 1975 and the Washington Diplomats the following year . In between and after his NASL adventure, he played in lower class English football for AFC Mossley , who played in the Northern Premier League . Overall, he completed in Mossley from his debut against Boston United on August 18, 1975 and the last appearance on December 1, 1976 against Macclesfield Town 83 games in which he got two goals. At the end of the 1970s, he then worked as a player -coach for Gainsborough Trinity .
