Sylvia Jebiwott Kibet (born March 28, 1984 in Kapchorwa, Elgeyo-Marakwet County ) is a Kenyan long-distance runner .

Life

Already in her early years she could show some successes. In 1998 she won the title in the 3000 meter run at the African youth championships. In 1999 she won the silver medal in the 1,500 meter run at the World Athletics Championships in Bydgoszcz . In 2000 there was a bronze medal over 3000 m at the African youth championships. Despite these promising results, Kibet decided to concentrate on her schooling for the time being. The return to running in 2003 caused her some difficulties after a long break and initially did not last long as she became a mother in 2004.

Only at the end of 2005 did she start a new attempt at her sporting career. In spring she won the Lagarina half marathon, the Nice half marathon and the South Tyrolean spring half marathon ; then she won bronze in the 5000-meter run at the African Athletics Championships in Bambous . In 2007 she won the 10 km du Conseil Général and won another bronze medal in the 5000 m at the Africa Games in Algiers. In addition, she started in the same year at the World Athletics Championships in Osaka , where she missed a medal as fourth over this distance by just 0.05 s. On New Year's Eve she won the BOclassic .

In 2008 she was fourth at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Valencia over 3000 m and at the Olympic Games in Beijing over 5000 m. At the end of the season she finished second at the Montferland Run and won the Corrida de Houilles.

The following year she finished second in the Nice half marathon and again won the 10 km du Conseil Général. At the World Cup in Berlin she finally managed to get into the medal ranks. She won over 5000 m in 14: 58.33 minutes behind her compatriot Vivian Jepkemoi Cheruiyot silver. At the Indoor World Championships in Doha , she came fourth over 3000 m again. In the same year she was runner-up in the Glasgow Women's 10k and won silver in the 5000 m at the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi . In 2011 she was second again behind Cheruiyot at the World Championships in Daegu over 5000 m, in 2012 she was fourth over 3000 m for the third time in a row at the Indoor World Championships in Istanbul .

In 2015 she finished second at the Haspa Marathon Hamburg, and in 2018 again fourth.

Sylvia Jebiwott Kibet is 1.57 m tall and weighs 44 kg. Her older sister Hilda Kibet and her cousin Lornah Kiplagat are also successful long-distance runners.
