Mount Elgon District was a district in the Kenyan province of Western . The capital was Kapsokwony . The district was southeast of Mount Elgon , in the north and west it bordered on Uganda . As part of the 2010 constitution , the Kenyan districts were dissolved. The area is now part of Bungoma County .

structure

The district was divided into four divisions: Kapsokwony, Kaptama, Kopsiro and Cheptais. These were divided into 16 locations and 40 sub-locations. The Mount Elgon District formed an electoral district.

Healthcare

The Mount Elgon District had one hospital, three health centers, and six dispensaries. There were more than 144,000 people for one doctor. 21% of the population in the Mount Elgon District were HIV- positive or had AIDS . Infant mortality was 6.36%, 9.4% of the children did not experience their 5th birthday.

Conflict on Mount Elgon

In May 2006 the conflict between the Kalenjin Saboat and the Kenyan government escalated . The Saboat accused the government of having given their land to the warring Okiek . The "Sabaot Land Defense Force" fought against the Okiek and the Kenyan army. In May 2008, more than 600 deaths and 400 victims of torture were reported.
