Butere

Butere is a city in Kakamega County of Kenya near the border with Uganda . Until its dissolution, Butere was the capital of the Butere / Mumias District . From Kisumu there is a branch line with passenger traffic to Butere. The place is an own constituency, has a district hospital, the Catholic Church maintains one of the rare schools and homes for the mentally handicapped. The Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) has opened a diocese here, of which Horace Etemesi has been a bishop since August 29, 1993.

The first woman writer in Africa, Grace Ogot, attended Butere High School here.
