Teso District

Teso District was a district in the Kenyan province of Western . The capital was Malaba . In the west the district bordered on Uganda . As part of the 2010 constitution , the Kenyan districts were dissolved. The area is now part of Busia County .

economy

In 2002, 56% of the population in the Teso District lived below the poverty line and earned less than one US dollar a day. 65% of the people live from agriculture, mainly maize , beans , millet , tobacco , coffee , cotton and sugar cane were grown. There was a lack of industry in the district.

Healthcare

There were 13 government health care institutions in the Teso District. Mainly malaria , respiratory infections and diseases of the digestive system were treated. The doctor-patient ratio was 1: 45,372. Infant mortality was 7.5%, and every eleventh child did not experience their fifth birthday. Roughly one in four residents in the Teso District was HIV- positive or infected with AIDS , making the district one of the highest HIV prevalence rates in Kenya. The reasons for this were given with the steadily increasing number of orphans and the associated increase in child prostitution and child labor with simultaneously falling agricultural yields.
