Mimar Kemaleddin
Mimar Kemaleddin ( Mahmud Kemaleddin ; * 1870 in the Acıbadem district of the Kadıköy district in İstanbul ; † July 12, 1927 in the Ulus district in Ankara ) was an important architect during the last phase of the Ottoman Empire and the beginnings of the Republic of Turkey . He is considered the most important architect of the Birinci Ulusal Mimarlık Akımı ( First National Architectural Movement ), which is to be settled between the years 1908 and 1927.
Life
His family moved to Crete because his father, who was a naval officer, was assigned an office on the island. During his stay in Crete, Kemaleddin learned French and Arabic . In 1875 his primary school education began at İbrahim Ağa İbtidai Mektebi in İstanbul and in 1881 his secondary school education in Crete. A year later he and his family moved back to İstanbul. After graduating from high school, he attended engineering school ( Mühendishane-i Berri Humayün ), which he graduated from the top of his class in 1891. The student Kemaleddin caught the eye of the German architect and professor August Jachmund during his school days , who then made him his assistant. He held this position for four years until he opened his own architecture office. Kemaleddin was also a student of the Austrian engineer Philipp Forchheimer and the German architect Kos. On January 8, 1895, Sultan Abdülhamid II sent him to the Technical University in Berlin for two years . He then stayed in Berlin for another two years to work in various architectural offices. August Jachmund was commissioned by the German government to investigate Ottoman architecture, at the same time Sultan Abdülhamid II commissioned him to design the Sirkeci terminus, the terminus of the Orient Express . While Mimar Kemaleddin was inspecting the construction site of the Ankara Palas Hotel on July 12, 1927 , he suffered a cerebral haemorrhage due to arterial hypertension , which resulted in his death. Kemaleddin's tomb is located in the Beyazıt Mosque cemetery in İstanbul.
