Ankara Palas is a state guest house and hotel under the direction of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Ankara .

history

The contract for the guest house in the Ulus district on Cumhuriyet Caddesi was taken over in 1924 by the architect Vedat Tek . After the foundations had been completed, Vedat Tek stopped working because of disputes with the foundation office, the Vakıflar Genel Müdürlüğü . It was taken over by Mimar Kemaleddin , who completed the building according to his plans until his death on the construction site. The building was completed in 1928.

The building with the oriental appearance is attributed to the architectural style of the first national trend ( Birinci Ulusal Mimarlık Akımı ), which is characterized by the combination of late Ottoman and European architecture. The building is directly opposite the second parliament. Conceptually, the building was initially intended as a clubhouse for the MPs, but was used as a guest house and hotel, where high-ranking statesmen such as Mustafa Kemal , ministers and MPs met with artists and journalists after work. The evenings and dance balls were a development field for social reforms (including the presence of women).

The hostel was considered to be the chicest location in the city and, in the new capital Ankara, was the only grand hotel in the city to also accommodate foreign state guests such as the Afghan King Amanullah Khan (1928) or the Iranian monarch Reza Shah Pahlavi (1934). Later Prime Ministers like Adnan Menderes also visited this location.

The foundation office operated the building as a hotel. When the business became unprofitable, it was closed and seized. In 1973 it was taken over by the Oleyis Sendikası catering trade union . Millî Selamet Partisi , who presides over the foundation office, forbade the serving of alcohol, which the operators opposed. In 1975 a new seizure took place. During this period, almost the entire facility was stolen, which meant that it was no longer possible to restore the original condition. The guest house was renovated in 1982 and came under the direction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1983. In addition to the classic task of accommodating state guests, some halls are rented out for weddings for financing purposes.
