After studying law, Voigt began his legal career as a lawyer in Hamburg in 1828, with a focus on commercial law, in particular marine and marine insurance law. In 1847 he became a partner in the Hamburg law firm Esche Schümann Commichau, which still exists today . In 1853 Voigt was elected by the Hamburg Senate as judge at the Higher Appeal Court of the four Free Cities . He exercised significant influence over the jurisdiction of this court due to his in-depth knowledge of commercial law and the insurance business. In the years 1863 to 1867, Voigt significantly reformed the marine insurance in Hamburg. In 1870 Voigt became a judge at the newly established Federal Higher Commercial Court in Leipzig, from which the Reich Higher Commercial Court soon emerged. The jurisprudence of this court in commercial matters was influenced by him, especially the decisions with a maritime and marine insurance law background. In 1879 Voigt retired with the entry into force of the Reich Justice Laws and the repeal of the ROHG after 26 years of higher court activity and moved from Leipzig to Hamburg. Voigt was the founder and editor of the “New Archives for Commercial Law” (1858 ff.). From 1840 to 1860 he worked on the collection of findings from the Lübeck Higher Appeal Court in Hamburg legal cases. His main work was the “Deutsche Seeversicherungsrecht”, published in three issues from 1884 to 1886. The last of these issues appeared after his death.

His son Johann Friedrich Voigt (1833–1920) was also a lawyer in Hamburg and first official of the Hamburg rulership of the marshland .

Johann Friedrich Voigt is commemorated on the double collecting grave plate of the Upper Court of the Althamburg Memorial Cemetery, Ohlsdorf Cemetery .
