history

Johann Carl Knauth

The law firm "Esche Schümann Commichau" (ESCHE) has its roots in the law firm "Knauth" founded by Johann Carl Knauth on June 21, 1822 . ESCHE is considered to be "the oldest law firm in Hamburg that still exists today and one of the oldest law firms in Germany". Since this was possible under professional law in 1974, lawyers , auditors and tax advisors have been associated in the partnership .

Many later Hamburg mayors , senators , court presidents and presidents of professional associations and chambers were partners of the partnership: In 1847, the later Reich Supreme Court Judge Johann Friedrich Voigt joined the partnership “Dres. Knauth & Voigt ”. In 1858 Ernst Friedrich Sieveking - later senator, long-time president of the Hanseatic Higher Regional Court and namesake of the Hamburg Sievekingplatz ( Hamburg Justice Forum ) - became a partner. In the years 1872/1875 Otto Wachsmuth and Johann Heinrich Burchard , who later became mayor of the Hanseatic city, were accepted into the firm as partners. When Max Harald Krauel joined in 1909, the partnership existed under the name “Dres. Wachsmuth Horwitz & Burchard ”from Otto Wachsmuth, Oscar Paul Horwitz and Wilhelm Amsinck Burchard-Motz , another later mayor of the Hanseatic city. Burchard-Motz was the son of Johann Heinrich Burchard and the father of Heinrich Burchard-Motz, who became a third-generation partner in 1931. The main focus of the law firm is maritime and commercial law.

Several of the firm's partners were honorary judges at the Hamburg Constitutional Court .

In 1948 Werner Deuchler became a partner in the law firm. The winner of the Emil von Sauer Prize (1986) opened national and international connections as chairman of the Hamburg Lawyers 'Association (1965–1970), as president of the German Lawyers' Association (from 1970) and the International Bar Association (from 1974).

"Esche Schümann & Partner" goes to the law firm "Ernst Esche" (founded in 1949 by Ernst Esche (1913–1994), from 1961 in partnership with Günter Sternberg (1929–2020)) and that from 1952 by Heinrich Windler and Jens Schümann founded auditors and tax consultants "Windler & Schümann" back. The merger of the two law firms of Ernst Esche and Jens Schümann in 1974 to form "Esche Schümann & Partner" represents the first interdisciplinary connection between lawyers and tax consultants in Hamburg.

In 1991 the law firms “Deuchler Krauel & Commichau ” and “Esche Schümann & Partner” merged and became “Esche Schümann Commichau”.

On the occasion of the firm's 175th anniversary in 1997, the Esche Schümann Commichau Foundation was established. Every year the foundation awards prizes to academic graduates in the fields of legal, economic and tax advice.
