The Jogye Temple (Kor. Jogyesa ) has been the main temple of the Jogye School in Korea, which belongs to Zen Buddhism , since 1936 . It is located in the center of Seoul in the Jongno-gu district.

The temple was founded at the beginning of the Joseon Dynasty in 1396 under the name Hwanggak Temple (Hwanggaksa). In the 20th century it was called Taego Temple (Taegosa) during the Japanese colonial era . It has had its current name since 1954.

The first thing you see when you enter the complex is a majestic pagoda tree , which, with its 24 meters height, provides cooling shade in summer. In front of the side entrance of the main hall Daeungjeon ("Hall of the great Shakyamuni") there is a nationally known, over 500 year old pine tree, which is a national natural monument.
