Later he qualified for the African Championships in Marrakech. After a successful run-up, he reached the finish line in 1: 49.74 minutes in seventh place. Gakeme has been training in Spain since 2015. There he took part in the spring, among other things, in the Spanish indoor championships, where he was able to win over 1500 meters. He competed in Europe throughout the season. In July he ran a time of 1: 44.09 minutes in Madrid, which has been his best time ever since. There he moved into the final, in which he ran a personal best indoor time of 1: 46.65 minutes, with which he became indoor vice world champion. In the course of the year he also qualified for the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. There he did not get beyond the lead.

In 2017 he took part in his third World Championships in London . As with his previous participations, he did not make it into the final again. In 2018 Gakeme competed at the World Indoor Championships in Birmingham. As fourth of his prelim, he missed making it into the final as fourth. In August he started at the African Championships in Nigeria. As in 2014, he made it into the final, in which he was only a hundredth of a second short of the bronze rank with a time of 1: 45.91 minutes, which the Moroccan Mostafa Smaili secured. In 2019, he missed participation in the World Championships in Doha.
