Bongaigaon is a city in the Indian state of Assam .

The city is the capital of the Bongaigaon district . Bongaigaon has the status of a municipal board . The city is divided into 25 wards . On the cut-off date of the 2011 census it had 67,322 inhabitants, of which 34,401 were men and 32,921 women. Hindus make up the majority of the city's population with a share of over 90%. Muslims form a minority of over 6%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 88.2% and thus above the national average.

The city is one of the largest commercial and industrial centers of Assam and all of Northeast India. Bongaigaon is also the gateway to the North-East Frontier Railway Zone on Indian Railways , thanks to New Bongaigaon Junction Station, the second largest train station in northeast India.

Bongaigaon was the last capital of the Kamatapur Kingdom and is home to many historical monuments of Assamese culture.
