Bongaigaon is a district in the west of the Indian state of Assam .
The area is 1093 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name, Bongaigaon .
history
The district was created in 1989 from parts of the districts Goalpara and Kokrajhar . In 2004, Chirang was separated and became a separate district, which reduced the area and population.
population
The population was 738,804 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 20.59%. Bongaigaon has a gender ratio of 966 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. In 2011 the district had a literacy rate of 69.74%, an increase of almost 7 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus below the national average. Almost 50.2% of the population are Muslims , approx. 48.6% are Hindus , approx. 0.8% are Christians , approx. 0.1% each are Sikhs or Jainas and approx. 0.2% indicated no religious affiliation or practiced other religions. 15.8% of the population are children under 6 years of age. Many residents belong to the Bengal people .
Almost 14.9% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Bongaigaon with 109,810 inhabitants.
economy
