Barpeta is a district in the center of the Indian state of Assam .

The area is 2282 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Barpeta .

history

The district was created in 1983 from parts of Kamrup .

population

The population was 1,693,622 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 21.43%, which is high. Barpeta has a gender ratio of 953 women per 1000 men and thus a male surplus that is common for India. The district had a literacy rate of 63.81% in 2011 , an increase of almost 6 percentage points compared to 2001. This means that literacy is well below the national average. Almost 70.7% of the population are Muslims , approx. 29.1% are Hindus and approx. 0.1% stated no religious affiliation or practiced other religions. 17% of the population are children under 6 years of age.
