Kokrajhar is a district in the center of the Indian state of Assam .
The area is 3381 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Kokrajhar . The district belongs to the Bodoland region .
history
The district was created in 1983 from parts of the Goalpara district . In 1989, Bongaigaon was separated and made into a separate district, which reduced the area and population.
population
The population was 887,142 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 5.21%. Kokrajhar has a gender ratio of 961 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. In 2011 the district had a literacy rate of 65.22%, an increase of almost 13 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus below the national average. Almost 59.6% of the population are Hindus , approx. 28.4% are Muslims , approx. 11.4% are Christians , approx. 0.2% are Buddhists and approx. 0.3% stated no religious affiliation or practiced another Religions. Children under 6 years of age are 15.4% of the population. The Bodo ethnic group has a population share of approx. 42%. The Bengal and Assamese form significant minorities .
Almost 6.2% of the population live in cities.
economy
The agriculture is the predominant source of income for most residents.
