Sonitpur is a district in the center of the Indian state of Assam .
The area is 5204 km². The administrative seat is the city of Tezpur .
history
The district was established in 1983. In 2015 Biswanath was separated and became a separate district, which reduced the area and population.
population
The population was 1,924,110 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 24.44%, which is high. Sonitpur has a gender ratio of 956 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. In 2011 the district had a literacy rate of 67.34%, an increase of almost 8 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus below the national average. Almost 74.0% of the population are Muslims , approx. 18.2% are Hindus , approx. 7.2% are Christians , approx. 0.3% are Buddhists , approx. 0.1% each are Jainas and Sikhs and approx 0.3% stated no religious affiliation or practiced other religions. 14.4% of the population are children under 6 years of age.
Almost 9.0% of the population live in cities.
