West Karbi Anglong is a district in the Indian state of Assam . The administrative seat is in Hamren .
history
The district was created in 2015 from parts of the Karbi Anglong district. At that time, the western part of the previous Karbi Anglong district, the Circle (Kreis) Donka, split off from the Karbi Anglong district and formed the new West Karbi Anglong district.
population
According to the 2011 census, West Karbi Anglong District has a population of 295,358. With 96 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is densely populated. The district is still rural. Of the 295,358 residents, 277,495 people (93.95%) live in rural areas and 17,863 people in urban communities.
The West Karbi Anglong District is one of the areas of India that has a high number of members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). They included (2011) 193,518 people (65.52 percent of the district's population). There are also 11,438 Dalits ( scheduled castes ) (3.87 per cent of the district population) in the district.
Population development
As everywhere in India, the population in the West Karbi Anglong District has been growing rapidly for decades. The increase in the years 2001–2011 was 19.5 percent (19.50%). In these ten years the population increased by over 48,000 people. The following table illustrates the development:

With the district capital Hamren and Donkamokam, there are only two villages in the district that count as cities (notified towns).
District population by gender
In 2011, the district had more male than female residents, which is common in India. Of the total population of 295,358 people, 151,187 (51.19 percent of the population) were males and 144,171 (48.81 percent of the population) were females. Among the youngest residents (52,135 people under 7 years of age), 26,503 people (50.84%) are male and 25,632 (49.16%) are female.

The population of the West Karbi Anglong District is linguistically very mixed. Almost half of the population speaks Karbi. Major minority languages, each with over 10,000 speakers, are Bhojpuri, Nepali, Bengali, Garo, Lalung and Assami. Dozens of other languages will follow. Population of the district by confession
The Hindus make up a clear majority of the population. The majority of the Karbi, the Assamese, the majority of the Bengal, the Hindi and the Dimasa belong to their followers. The Christians are a significant minority. They include a majority of the Garo and Khasi and a minority of the Karbi. The following table shows the exact religious composition of the population:

education
Thanks to significant efforts, literacy is increasing. Yet it is deep. Just under 63 percent of the population can read and write. In urban areas, more than 84 percent can read and write. In the countryside, on the other hand, it is just under 62 percent. The strong differences between the sexes and the urban / rural population are typical of Indian conditions.
