The district of Hailakandi ( Bengali হাইলাকান্দি জেলা , Assamese হাইলাকান্দি জিলা ) is a district of the Indian state of Assam . The administrative seat is the eponymous city of Hailakandi .

geography

The district of Hailakandi is located in the Barak Valley in southern Assam. Neighboring districts are Karimganj in the west, Cachar in the northeast, Kolasib in the southeast and Mamit in the south. The last two already belong to the neighboring state of Mizoram .

The area of ​​the Hailakandi district is 1,326 square kilometers. This makes it the third smallest district of Assam. The district area has an elongated shape. It consists of the valley of the Dhaleswari River, which flows through the district from south to north before flowing into the Barak . In the west and east, the mountains that border the Barak valley protrude into the district area.

history

The story of Hailakandi is largely identical to that of Cachar . After the area came under British rule in 1832 , it was incorporated into the province of Assam as part of the Cachar district. In 1869 the Hailakandi subdivision was established within the Cachar district. As an independent district, Hailakandi split from Cachar in 1989.

population

According to the 2011 census, the Hailakandi district has 659,296 inhabitants. With 497 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is very densely populated. The district is still predominantly rural. Of the 659,296 residents, 611,156 people (92.70%) live in rural areas and 48,140 people in urban communities.

The district of Hailakandi belongs to the areas of India that are only sparsely populated by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). They included (2011) 691 people (0.10 percent of the district population). There are 70,659 Dalits ( scheduled castes ; 10.72 percent of the district population) in the district.

The majority of the population is made up of people who were born in the district. 620,551 people (94.12 percent of residents) were born in the district. A total of 5,596 people were born in other Indian states (including 2,482 people in Tripura, 600 people in West Bengal, 566 people in Bihar, 409 in Meghalaya and 377 people in Mizoram). Of the 1,933 foreign-born people, 1,574 are from Bangladesh.

Population development

As everywhere in India, the population in the Hailakandi district has been growing rapidly for decades. The increase in the years 2001–2011 was 21.5 percent (21.45%). In these ten years the population increased by over 116,000 people. The following table illustrates the development:

As is common in India, the district always had more male than female residents. Among the youngest residents (111,268 people under 7 years of age), the proportions are 56,936 men (51.17 percent) and 54,342 people (48.83 percent) women.

District population by language

Due to its location, the Barak Valley, to which the Hailakandi district belongs, has culturally strong affinities with Bengal. So the main language is Bengali . At the district level, it has an official status in Hailakandi as well as in the other two districts of the Barak Valley, alongside Assamese , the official language of Assam.

The linguistic minorities are concentrated in the Zillas (districts) Katlichara and Lala. The most widely spoken languages ​​are shown in the following table:

Population of the district by confession

A majority of the population is Muslim. In all Zillas, the Muslims are the most important religious community with shares between 50.00% (Katlichara) and 71.07% (Hailakandi). The Muslims clearly predominate in the Zillas Algapur and Hailakandi. The Zillas Katlichara (47.01 percent) and Lala (42.61 percent) have high proportions of Hindus. There is a small Christian minority in the Zillas Katlichara and Lala. This consists mainly of immigrants from other regions of India. education

Thanks to significant efforts, literacy has risen sharply in recent decades. In urban areas, almost 93 percent can read and write. In the countryside, on the other hand, only around 73 percent can. The strong differences between the sexes and the urban / rural population are typical of Indian conditions.
