Hailakandi ( Bengali and Assamese : হাইলাকান্দি Hāilākāndi [ ˈhailakan̪d̪i ]) is a city in the Indian state of Assam . It is the administrative seat of the Hailakandi District . The population is 33,637 (2011 census).
Hailakandi is located in the Barak Valley in the south of Assam, around 30 kilometers southwest of Silchar . The Dhaleshwari River , a tributary of the Barak , flows east of the city . The Barak Valley is surrounded on three sides by mountains and thus largely isolated from the rest of Assam. Historically and culturally, however, there are close ties to East Bengal (today's Bangladesh ). The majority language is not Assamese , the official language of Assam, but Bengali .
