Kamrup is a district in the Indian state of Assam .
The area is 2176 km². The administrative seat is the city of Amingaon (part of Guwahati ).
history
The district emerged in 2003 from the undivided Kamrup district, which also included the current Kamrup Metropolitan district .
population
The population was 1,517,542 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 15.69%. Kamrup has a gender ratio of 949 women per 1000 men and thus a frequent surplus of men for India. The district had a literacy rate of 75.55% in 2011 , an increase of almost 8 percentage points compared to 2001. This means that literacy is slightly above the national average. Almost 57.8% of the population are Hindus , approx. 39.7% are Muslims , approx. 2.2% are Christians , approx. 0.1% are Jainas and approx. 0.2% did not indicate any religious affiliation or practiced any other Religions. 13.2% of the population are children under 6 years of age. Various indigenous peoples of Assam live in the district. The majority language is the Kamrup dialect of the Assamese language .
Almost 9.4% of the population live in cities.
economy
The economy of the Kamrup district is primarily based on agriculture . It is rice grown and silk and cotton produced.
