Nagaon is a district in the center of the Indian state of Assam .

The area is 3973 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Nagaon . The Kaziranga National Park lies partly in Nagaon.

history

The modern district has existed since 1833. In 1989 Morigaon and 2015 Hojaj were separated and became separate districts, reducing the area and population.

In 1983, more than 2,000 people were killed in pogroms against the district's Muslim population.

population

The population was 2,823,768 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 22%, which is high. Nagaon has a gender ratio of 962 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district had a literacy rate of 72.37% in 2011 , an increase of almost 11 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus slightly below the national average. Almost 55.4% of the population are Muslims , approx. 43.4% are Hindus , approx. 1.0% are Christians , approx. 0.1% are Sikhs , and approx. 0.2% did not declare any religion or practice other religions. 16.3% of the population are children under 6 years of age.

Almost 13.1% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Nagaon with 117,722 inhabitants.

economy

The agriculture is the backbone of the economy. Rice is the main food of the residents and rice is the main crop grown in the district. The Nagaon district's economy also includes another important sector, fisheries .
