Goalpara is a district in the west of the Indian state of Assam .

The area is 1824 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Goalpara .

history

The Goalpara district came under British rule in 1765. In 1989, Bongaigaon was separated and made into a separate district, which reduced the area and population. In 1983 the districts of Dhubri and Kokrajhar had already been spun off from Goalpara.

population

The population was 1,008,183 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 22.64% and was therefore very high. Goalpara has a gender ratio of 961 women per 1000 men and thus a frequent surplus of men for India. In 2011 the district had a literacy rate of 67.37%, an increase of almost 9 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus above the national average. Almost 57.5% of the population are Muslims , approx. 34.5% are Hindus , approx. 7.7% are Christians , approx. 0.1% each are Sikhs and Jainas and approx. 0.1% indicated no religious affiliation or practiced other religions. 17.0% of the population are children under 6 years of age.

Almost 13.7% of the population live in cities.

The agriculture is the predominant source of income for most residents.
