Darrang is a district in the center of the Indian state of Assam .

The area is 1585 km². The administrative seat is the city of Mangaldai .

history

In 1984 Sonitpur was separated and became a separate district, which reduced the area and population.

population

The population was 928,500 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 22.19%, which is very high. Dibrugarh has a gender ratio of 954 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. In 2011 the district had a literacy rate of 63.08%, an increase of almost 9 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus above the national average. Almost 64.3% of the population are Muslims , approx. 35.3% are Hindus , approx. 0.2% are Christians , approx. 0.1% each are Jainas and Sikhs and approx. 0.1% indicated no religious affiliation or practiced other religions. 16.9% of the population are children under 6 years of age.

Almost 6% of the population live in cities.
