Sivasagar is a district in the east of the Indian state of Assam .

The area is 2668 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Sivasagar .

history

The district was once the center of the Ahom Dynasty , which ruled parts of Assam for more than 600 years. From 1699 to 1788 the city of Sivasagar (then Rongpur) was the capital of the Kingdom of Ahom. Various temples and sites from that time are still preserved today.

The modern district emerged in 1976 from parts of the Jorhat district . In 1987 Golaghat was separated and became a separate district, which reduced the area and population. In 2015 this was repeated with Charaideo .

population

The population was 1,151,050 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 9.44%. Sivasagar has a gender ratio of 954 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district had a literacy rate of 80.41% in 2011 , an increase of almost 6 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus above the national average. Almost 87.5% of the population are Hindus , approx. 8.3% are Muslims , approx. 2.9% are Christians , approx. 0.3% are Buddhists , approx. 0.1% are Sikhs and approx. 9% did not declare any religious affiliation or practiced other religions. Children under 6 years of age are 12.1% of the population.

Almost 9.6% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Sivasagar with 126,389 inhabitants.

economy

The main industries in Sivasagar are the oil industry, tea cultivation and tourism. The majority of the population works in agriculture.
