Sivasagar , also Sibsagar , is a city in the Indian state of Assam .

The city is the capital of the Sivasagar district . Sivasagar has the status of a municipal board . The city is divided into 14 wards . On the cut-off date of the 2011 census it had 50,781 inhabitants, of which 26,925 were men and 23,856 women. Hindus make up the majority of the city's population with a share of over 78%. Muslims form a minority of over 20%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 91.8%, well above the national average.

Sivasagar, formerly known as Rangpur, was the capital of the Ahom Kingdom from 1699 to 1788 . The Ahoms ruled Assam for six centuries until their kingdom fell to the Burmese in 1819 and their ruling class was all but wiped out. The city was conquered by the British in 1825 and completely annexed in 1826.
