Chirang is a district in the Indian state of Assam .

The area is 1923 km². The administrative seat is the city of Kajalgaon .

history

The district was created in 2004 from parts of the Bongaigaon district .

population

The population was 482,162 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 11.34%. Chirang has a gender ratio of 969 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district had a literacy rate of 63.55% in 2011 , an increase of almost 11 percentage points compared to 2001. This means that literacy is below the national average. Almost 66.5% of the population are Hindus , approx. 22.7% are Muslims , approx. 10.3% are Christians , approx. 0.1% are Buddhists and approx. 0.4% did not indicate any religious affiliation or practiced another Religions. 15.2% of the population are children under 6 years of age. Most of the inhabitants belong to the ethnic groups of the Bodo , Bengal and Adivasi .

Almost 7.3% of the population live in cities.

economy

The agriculture is the predominant source of income for most residents.
