Tinsukia is a district in the east of the Indian state of Assam .
The area is 3790 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Tinsukia . The Dibru-Saikhowa National Park is located in the district.
history
The district was created in 1976 from parts of the Dibrugarh district .
population
The population was 1,327,929 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 15.47%. Tinsukia has a gender ratio of 952 women per 1000 men, a male surplus that is common for India. In 2011 the district had a literacy rate of 69.66%, an increase of almost 9 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus below the national average. Almost 89.0% of the population are Hindus , approx. 5.8% are Christians , approx. 3.6% are Muslims , approx. 1.2% are Buddhists , approx. 0.2% are Sikhs , approx. 1% are Jainas and approx. 0.2% did not declare any religious affiliation or practiced other religions. 13.7% of the population are children under 6 years of age.
Almost 19.9% of the population live in cities. The largest agglomeration is Tinsukia with 126,389 inhabitants.
