Lakhimpur is a district in the Indian state of Assam . The administrative seat is the city of North Lakhimpur .

location

The district is located in northeast India north of the Brahmaputra . It borders in the north on the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh , in the east on the district Dhemaji , in the south on the district Majuli and in the west on the district Sonitpur .

geography

The district belongs to the areas with a temperate climate with temperatures between 8 and 35 degrees. The forest areas are mostly tropical rainforest. The annual 3000 mm of rain mainly comes from the northeast monsoon. The Brahmaputra is the most important river in the district. It is also responsible for the frequent flooding in the valley area.

history

The area belonged to the Kingdom of Pragjiyotishpur in the 7th and 8th centuries and then to the Kingdom of Pal. Most of the time, dynasties belonging to Hinduism ruled over the next few centuries. The Kingdom of Ahom was the most important of these states and ruled the area from 1228 to 1826. In recent years, however, as a subject of the Burmese. Since 1792 the British East India Company tried to establish itself in the area. With the Treaty of Yandabo after the First British-Burmese War , the area came under British rule in 1826 (until 1947). In 1976 Dibrugarh was separated and became a separate district, which reduced the area and population. In 1989 this was repeated with Dhemaji.

A total of 12,365 people were born in other Indian states (including 4,624 people in Bihar, 2,041 people in West Bengal, 1,715 people in Arunachal Pradesh, 1,281 people in Rajasthan, 783 in Uttar Pradesh and 700 people in Jharkhand). Of the 1,523 foreign-born people, 756 are from Bangladesh and 431 are from Nepal.

Various Tibetan Burman languages ​​are spoken among the tribal population . The official language is Assamese , the main language of Assam. The population in Dhemaji District is very linguistically mixed. A slim majority speaks Assami. But around 93 percent of the population use one of the five main languages.

At Zilla Subansiri, 38,235 people (50.92 percent of the population) speak Assami, 33,309 people (44.36 percent of the population) Miri / Mishing and 2,169 people (2.89 percent of the population) speak Bengali.

Population of the district by confession

A clear majority of the population are Hindus. The Muslims are a strong religious minority. The Christians are a smaller minority.

The three zillas Dhakuakhana (Pt), Narayanpur and Subansiri (Pt) are almost entirely Hindu (between 94.83 and 98.66 percent of the population). There are numerous Muslims and Christians in the other four Zillas.

education

Thanks to significant efforts, literacy has risen sharply in recent decades. In urban areas, almost 87 percent can read and write.
