Golaghat is a district in the center of the Indian state of Assam . The administrative seat is the city of the same name Golaghat .

history

The district was formed in 1987 from parts of the Sivasagar district .

population

According to the 2011 census, the Golaghat district has 1,066,888 inhabitants. With 305 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is densely populated. The district is still predominantly rural. Of the 1,066,888 residents, 969,152 people (90.84%) live in rural areas and 97,736 people live in urban communities.

The Golaghat district is one of the areas of India that are populated in large numbers by members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). Among them were (2011) 111,765 people (10.48 percent of the district population). There are 62,298 Dalits ( scheduled castes , 5.84 percent of the district population) in the district.

The majority of the population is made up of people who were born in the district. Of the residents, 957,914 people (89.79 percent of residents) were born in the district. A total of 15,713 people were born in other Indian states (including 5,553 people in Bihar, 2,257 people in Nagaland, 1,348 people in Uttar Pradesh, 1,197 people in Jharkhand, 1,178 in Rajasthan and 1,150 people in West Bengal). Of the 1,233 foreign-born people, 425 are from Nepal and 397 are from Bangladesh.

District population by language

Various Tibetan Burman languages ​​are spoken among the tribal population . The official language is Assamese , the main language of Assam.

At Zilla Bokakhat, 142,886 people (87.15 percent of the population) speak Assami, 4,962 people (3.03 percent of the population) Miri / Mishing, 3,546 people (2.16 percent of the population) Hindi, and 3,390 people (2.07 percent of the population) speak Hindi Population) Nepali.

And in Zilla Sarupathar, 123,284 people (53.85 percent of the population) speak Assami, 31,163 people (13.61 percent of the population) Bengali, 17,949 people (7.84 percent of the population) Nepali, 10,057 people (4.9 percent of the population) ) Bodo / Boro and 7,841 people (3.43 percent of the population) Sadan / Sadri.

Population of the district by confession

A clear majority of almost 86 percent of the population are Hindus. Major minorities are the Muslims and the Christians. The Zillas Bokakhat and Khumtai are almost entirely Hindu. In the other four zillas, the Hindus are also clearly in the majority.

The Muslims form significant minorities in three of the six Zillas. In Zilla Dergaon with 20,471 people (14.01 percent of the population), in Zilla Golaghat with 26,546 people (8.11 percent of the population) and in Zilla Sarupathar with 25,451 people (11.12 percent of the population).

The Christians can be found in three of the six Zillas. In Zilla Golaghat with 11,960 people (3.65 percent of the population), in Zilla Morangi with 13,856 people (12.06 percent of the population) and in Zilla Sarupathar with 21,549 people (9.41 percent of the population).

education

Thanks to significant efforts, literacy has risen sharply in recent decades. In urban areas, over 91 percent can read and write. In the countryside, however, there are only three out of four residents. The strong differences between the sexes and the urban / rural population are typical of Indian conditions.
