Golaghat is a city in the Indian state of Assam .
The city is the capital of the Golaghat District . Golaghat has the status of a municipal board . The city is divided into 13 wards . On the cut-off date of the 2011 census it had 41,989 inhabitants, of which 21,513 were men and 20,476 women. Hindus make up the majority of the city's population with a share of over 77%. Muslims form a minority of over 19%. The literacy rate in 2011 was 90.9%, well above the national average.
The cultivation of tea is of economic importance. The movement of the small tea farmers in Assam was started from Golaghat.
