Higher service at federal academic libraries

The senior service at federal academic libraries is the only subject-specific preparatory service in Germany at federal level that has been set up for the career of the linguistic and cultural studies service ( Annex 2 FSVO ). It should enable civil servants to perform the tasks in all work areas of the library system ( § 2 Paragraph 1 LAP-hDBiblV).

General

Basic regulations are made in the “Ordinance on careers, training and examinations for the higher service at federal academic libraries” ( LAP-hDBiblV ). In addition to specialist knowledge, the preparatory service also provides the basics for the understanding of cultural, legal, political, economic, technical and social issues required to perform the task ( § 2 LAP-hDBiblV).

The recruitment authorities are the highest federal authorities , the federal agency Die Deutsche Bibliothek and the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation ( Section 8 (1) sentence 1 LAP-hDBiblV). Educational libraries are basically the federal institute Die Deutsche Bibliothek, the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin Preußischer Kulturbesitz , the library of the Ibero-American Institute Preussischer Kulturbesitz , the library of the German Bundestag and the university libraries of the universities of the Federal Armed Forces ( Section 3 (2) sentence 1 LAP-hDBiblV ).

With the setting in the preparatory service applicants relying on the will employment relationship of a civil servant candidate for library clerks ( service name ) appointed ( § 8 para. 1 LAP hDBiblV). The preparatory service lasts two years. It encompasses practical training in key library areas and theoretical training ( Section 9 (1) LAP-hDBiblV). Theoretical training lasts twelve months and takes place at a university ( Section 9 (2) LAP-hDBiblV). The practical training comprises internship I (large internship) of ten months and internship II (small internship) of two months ( Section 9 (3) LAP-hDBiblV).
