Hojai is a district in the Indian state of Assam . The administrative seat is in Hojai .

history

The district was created in 2015 from parts of Nagaon District . At that time, the Doboka, Hojai and Lanka circles split off from the Nagaon district and formed the new district of Hojai.

population

According to the 2011 census, Hojai district has 931,218 inhabitants. With 640 inhabitants per square kilometer, the district is very densely populated. The district is still rural. Of the 931,218 residents, 758,868 people (81.49%) live in rural areas and 172,350 people in urban communities.

The district of Hojai is one of the areas of India that has only a small number of members of the "tribal population" ( scheduled tribes ). (2011) 28,731 people (3.08 percent of the district population) belonged to them. There are also 109,437 Dalits ( scheduled castes ) (11.75 per cent of the district population) in the district.

As everywhere in India, the population in the Hojai district has been growing rapidly for decades. The increase between 2001 and 2011 was 25 percent (25.03%). In these ten years the population increased by over 186,000 people. The following table illustrates the development:

In 2011, the district had more male than female residents, which is common in India. Of the total population of 931,218 people, 476,480 (51.17 percent of the population) were male and 454,738 female. Among the youngest residents (151,731 people under 7 years of age), 77,060 people (50.79%) are male and 74,671 people (49.21%) are female.

District population by language

The population of Hojai District is linguistically mixed. Bengali is the most common language and makes up a small majority of the population. Important minority languages are Assami and Hindi. Dozens of other languages will follow. The following table shows the most widely used languages:

Population of the district by confession

The Muslims make up a small majority of the population. There are 265,366 (87.36 percent of residents) Muslims in Circle Doboka. In the other two circles, the majority of the population are Hindus (62.87 percent in Lanka and 59.24 percent in Hojai). The following table shows the exact religious composition of the population:

education

Thanks to significant efforts, literacy is increasing. Almost 75 percent of the population can read and write. In urban areas, more than 87 percent can read and write. In the countryside, on the other hand, it is just under 72 percent. The strong differences between the sexes and the urban / rural population are typical of Indian conditions.
