Baksa is a district in the Indian state of Assam .

The area is 2457 km². The administrative seat is Mushalpur . The district belongs to the Bodoland region .

history

The district was created in 2004 from parts of several other districts.

population

The population was 887,142 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 5.21%. Baksa has a gender ratio of 974 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district had a literacy rate of 69.25% in 2011 , an increase of almost 10 percentage points compared to 2001. This means that literacy is below the national average. Almost 82.4% of the population are Hindus , approx. 14.3% are Muslims , approx. 2.9% are Christians , approx. 0.1% are Buddhists and approx. 0.3% did not indicate any religion or practice any other Religions. Children under 6 years of age are 12.9% of the population.

Only 1.3% of the population live in cities.
