Dibrugarh is a district in the east of the Indian state of Assam .
The area is 3381 km². The administrative seat is the city of the same name Dibrugarh .
history
The district was formed in 1976 from parts of the Lakhimpur district . In 1989 Tinsukia was separated and made into a separate district, which reduced the area and population.
population
The population was 1,326,335 (2011). The population growth rate in the period from 2001 to 2011 was 11.92%. Dibrugarh has a gender ratio of 961 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district had a literacy rate of 76.05% in 2011 , an increase of almost 8 percentage points compared to 2001. This means that literacy is above the national average. Almost 90.4% of the population are Hindus , approx. 4.9% are Muslims , approx. 4.0% are Christians , approx. 0.4% are Buddhists , approx. 0.2% are Sikhs , approx. 1% are Jainas and approx. 0.2% did not declare any religious affiliation or practiced other religions. Children under 6 years of age are 12.3% of the population. More than half of the population belong to indigenous tribes and the Adivasi.
Almost 18.4% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Dibrugarh with 139,565 inhabitants.
economy
The agriculture is the predominant source of income for most residents. The district is tea , rice and sugar cane grown. There is also an oil refinery and coal mines.
