Kamrup Metropolitan is a district in the Indian state of Assam .
The area is 955 km². The administrative seat is the city of Guwahati .
history
The district emerged in 2003 from the undivided Kamrup district , which also included the current Kamrup district .
population
The population was 1,253,938 (2011). The population growth rate from 2001 to 2011 was 18.34%. Kamrup Metropolitan has a gender ratio of 936 women per 1000 men and thus a common surplus of men for India. The district had a literacy rate of 88.71% in 2011 , an increase of almost 5 percentage points compared to 2001. The literacy rate is thus above the national average and is the highest among all districts in Assam. Almost 84.9% of the population are Hindus , approx. 12.1% are Muslims , approx. 1.5% are Christians , approx. 0.7% are Jainas , 0.3% are Sikhs , 0.1% are Buddhists and approx. 0.4% did not report any religious affiliation or practiced other religions. 10% of the population are children under 6 years of age. The majority language is the Kamrup dialect of the Assamese language .
Almost 82.7% of the population live in cities. The largest city is Guwahati with 957,352 inhabitants.
