Nelson Leirner (born January 16, 1932 in São Paulo ; † March 7, 2020 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian draftsman, painter , set designer and teacher .

life and work

Leirner was born the son of the sculptor Felícia Leirner and the director of the Museum of Modern Art of São Paulo Isai Leirner and is the brother of the painter Giselda Leirner . From 1947 to 1952 he studied textile engineering in Massachusetts at the Lowell Technological Institute, from 1956 to 1958 he studied fine arts in São Paulo with Joan Ponc and Samson Flexor. In 1961 he took part as a set designer at the 3rd Biennale of the Fine Arts of Theater. In 1966 he founded the Rex Group with Wesley Duke Lee (1931), Geraldo de Barros (1923–1998), Carlos Fajardo (1941), José Resende (1945) and Frederico Nasser (1945). The group dealt with issues such as the relationships between art, the market, institutions and the public. In 1967 he organized the Exposição-Não-Exposição, the closing event of the group's activities, during which he offered his own works to the public free of charge. In the same year he sent a stuffed pig to the 4th Salon for Modern Art in Brasília and asked publicly through the Jornal da Tarde what criteria the jury would use to accept the work. In 1969, for political reasons, he closed his special room at the 10th International Biennale in São Paulo and from 1971 turned down further invitations to the Biennale. In 1974 he exhibited the series The Animal Rebellion, with works that strongly criticize the military regime, for which he was recognized by the Paulista Association of Art Critics (APCA) as best artist. From 1977 to 1997 he taught at the Armando Álvares Penteado Foundation in São Paulo. In 1997 he moved to Rio de Janeiro.
